Curriculum
Lighthouse Christian Academy utilizes the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum
which is built upon the following five basic laws of learning:
- Students must be at levels where they can perform
- Reasonable goals must be set
- Students must be controlled and motivated
- Learning must be measurable
- Learning must be rewarded
From its beginning in 1970, the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum has held to the following goals:
- A solid back-to-basics educational program
- A course of study individualized to meet a child's specific needs
and learning capabilities
- A program incorporating goal setting, character building, and wisdom
principles
- A curriculum using available advanced computer technology to help
ensure the finest education possible in today's high-tech climate
One significant result from adhering to these goals is that students score higher
than their counterparts in conventional programs using the same standardized achievement
tests.
Whether the student is a high achiever or a moderately paced learner, the Accelerated
Christian Education educational process proceeds at the exact level determined by
the child's ability.
Individualization makes it possible for each student to master the subject before
moving on. Such mastery is the foundation upon which all future learning is
built.
Individualization produces academic excellence. Students take responsibility
for their own learning. Biblical character training received as part of this
learning experience prepares students to welcome and accept challenges and future
opportunities that come their way.
Biblical values and concepts considered foundational to relationships and productive
living are conveyed throughout the curriculum in such a way as to become life-shaping
influences.
Services
Diagnostic Testing
Proper academic diagnosis is vital to your student's success. Students enrolled
in Lighthouse Christian Academy are given diagnostic tests to determine skill and
concept mastery. Enrolled families are assigned an experienced Academic Advisor
who evaluates the diagnostic tests and prescribes curriculum based on the student's
individual needs. Weak areas (gaps) are strengthened first; then the student
continues, progressing at his achievement level.
Academic Advisors are available year-round to assist you in making your home schooling
a success.
Projected Course of Study
Academic Advisors also prepare a projected course of study for high school students,
outlining all courses needed for graduation. Four courses of study are offered:
honors, college preparatory, general, and vocational. Two Bible credits are
required for High School graduation from Lighthouse Christian Academy.
Report Cards
Students enrolled in Lighthouse Christian Academy receive the full support services
of a school administration office.
Academic records are maintained based on tests and grades submitted by the parent.
Progress Reports are prepared and sent to the parent at the end of each semester.
Transcripts and Enrollment Verification
Lighthouse Christian Academy maintains a permanent school record for each student.
Official transcripts are sent to schools and colleges as requested. Enrollment
verification is also provided as needed.
End-of-Year Standardized Testing
Year-end standardized testing is another benefit of enrollment in Lighthouse Christian
Academy. The Stanford 10/OLSAT 8 is a complete academic evaluation. When the two
tests are taken together, the scores are a valuable tool, relating a student's
actual achievement with his or her school ability. Norm-referenced scores enable
you to compare your student's achievement with that of students of similar age,
grade, and academic aptitude. The parent contacts their child's academic advisor
at Lighthouse Christian Academy for specific details. After the test is computer-scored,
the results become a part of the student's permanent record.
High School Diploma
When students have satisfied all the academic requirements, a High School Diploma
will be issued by Lighthouse Christian Academy. (Transfer students must earn
a minimum of six credits in Lighthouse Christian Academy.) When final tests
and grades are submitted, diplomas are mailed, unless the student is planning to
attend the graduation ceremony.
Graduation Ceremony
Each spring a formal ceremony is held for the graduating seniors who choose to participate.
This exciting evening features graduates in caps and gowns, a special guest commencement
speaker, a keepsake video of the ceremony, and an opportunity to meet your Lighthouse
Christian Academy staff. A portrait photographer will be available for group
and/or individual pictures.
Enrollment Procedures
To enroll in Lighthouse Christian Academy: Print and complete the
LCA Application (requires Acrobat Reader) and mail it along with the enrollment
fees. The enrollment fees include an application fee of $50 per child (levels K-8)
or $100 per child (levels 9-12) with a family maximum of $250 and an annual administration
fee for each student enrolled. The annual administration fee ranges from $250 to
$400 for each student according to grade level. The application fee is non-refundable;
however, the annual administration fee is refundable for a limited time, on a declining
scale. (See the LCA Application for details.)
Additionally, the curriculum is purchased separately. Please consult the catalog
for curriculum prices.
Curriculum Payment: LCA students receive a 20% discount off catalog prices on curriculum
items (PACEs and Score Keys) and 10% discount on noncurriculum items on initial
annual orders. Orders for materials are processed when paid in full. LCA accepts
cash, checks, money orders, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
After Enrolling: Diagnostic tests are sent for each enrolled student (exception:
student who last attended a school using the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum).
Return the scored tests to your assigned advisor for evaluation. Curriculum costs
are additional and will vary based upon the academic prescription. Your academic
advisor will call to discuss the prescription, verify your curriculum payment method,
and place your curriculum order. Allow 3 weeks to finalize enrollment, to complete
testing, and to receive academic evaluation. Allow an additional 3-4 weeks to receive
the curriculum.
